Harry Gordon Selfridge

Harry Gordon Selfridge, Sr. (11 January 1858 – 8 May 1947)[1] was an American-Britishbusinessowner. He founded the London-based department storeSelfridges. He was one of the most respected and wealthyretail businessmen in the United Kingdom.

Early life

Selfridge was born in Ripon, Wisconsin.[2] Selfridge was raised in Jackson, Michigan.

Selfridge's parents were Robert Oliver Selfridge and his wife Lois. They had three sons.[3] His father fought in the American Civil War. He was a major in the Union Army.[3] After he was discharged, he did not come back to the family.[3]

Both of Selfridge's brothers died young. His mother taught school.

From the age of 10, Harry began working. He sold newspapers to help his mother.
